Plan your furniture before you plan your sockets

For building or renovating a home — and getting it right from the start.

Your score shows how complex your interior design project really is

Your result shows how many decisions need to be coordinated before your home can function properly.

For a simple update, a furniture store or supplier may be enough.

But for a full renovation or complex interior design project, you need someone who sees the whole picture: layout, furniture, sockets, lighting, finishes, installations and implementation.

Furniture store, designer, architect or interior architect — what’s the difference?

When planning a home, there are four types of specialists you can work with. The real difference is not in the hourly consultation fee — it shows in the final result. Here’s what each one can offer for the same space.

Furniture store advice showing individual furniture pieces placed around an empty room before a complete interior design plan.

Furniture store

A furniture store can help you choose products from its own range: sofas, wardrobes, tables, finishes and decorative pieces that match visually.

However, this is usually product advice, not a complete interior design plan. You still need to decide the furniture layout, check if the pieces fit your space, and coordinate them with the electrical plan, lighting, finishes and installation.

This option makes sense if your layout is already clear and you only need support choosing suitable products.

Interior designer

An interior designer can help you create a beautiful visual concept for your home, with a clear style direction, moodboard, colour palette and furniture recommendations.

However, if the process focuses only on aesthetics, the room may look attractive but still feel uncomfortable or impractical in daily life. Functionality depends on more than style: circulation, furniture positions, door openings, socket placement, window access and lighting all need to work together.

This option makes sense if your furniture layout is already correct and you mainly need support with styling, finishes and visual coordination.

Architect

An architect is essential when you are designing or building a house. They handle the technical and legal side of the project: structure, façade, roof, building regulations, construction permits and official documentation.

However, the architectural project does not always solve the full interior experience. The interior layout, furniture planning, lighting, finishes, sockets and day-to-day functionality often require additional specialists, such as interior designers, 3D artists and project managers. If these roles are not coordinated, the final result can become fragmented.

This option makes sense if you are building a new home and need the architectural project, technical documentation and construction permits.

Interior Architect

An interior architect is specialised in the way an interior space functions, looks and feels in real life. This includes space planning, furniture layout, circulation, sockets, lighting, plumbing, finishes, materials, aesthetics and implementation.

Unlike a process focused only on products or styling, interior architecture connects the functional, aesthetic and technical decisions inside the home. The goal is not just to make the space look good, but to make it work properly in everyday life.

This option makes sense if you are building, renovating or changing a home and want the entire interior to be planned clearly and coherently from the start.

What are the steps of a bespoke interior design project?

number-1 (1).png

Site measurements and space analysis

Every interior design project starts with the real dimensions of the home.

At this stage, the space is measured and analysed, including existing constraints, elements that need to stay, areas that require changes and features that must be integrated into the final design.

number-3 (1).png

Technical drawings, budgeting and product selections

A complete interior design project needs clear technical drawings for execution, including electrical layouts, plumbing, bespoke furniture, finishes, ceiling details, lighting and other relevant plans. At the same time, products, materials and furniture pieces are selected, so the project has a coherent direction and a budget that is easier to control.

Space planning, interior design and 3D visualisations

Once the measurements are clear, the layout is developed: furniture positions, circulation, storage areas, functional zones and the overall design direction. 3D visualisations help you see how the home will look before work begins, so decisions can be adjusted before construction or renovation starts.

Implementation, bespoke furniture and final styling

The final stage is where the design becomes a real space. This includes coordinating suppliers, bespoke furniture, selected products, final details and any necessary site adjustments, so the finished interior stays as close as possible to the approved design.

In short, a complete interior design project is not just about choosing beautiful products. It means coordinating the layout, furniture, technical installations, lighting, finishes and implementation into one clear plan.

Renders, drawings and selections are not just there to make the project look good.

They help you make clear decisions about furniture, finishes, lighting and details before anything is ordered, built or changed on site.

Why Work with Simona Preda for Your Interior Design Project

Urban Moon was built around one simple principle: a good interior design project must function before it looks beautiful. That is why every project starts with the layout, space planning and practical decisions — not with a shopping list

I’m Simona Preda, interior architect and founder of Urban Moon.

I came to interior design through a combination of structure and visual expression: mathematics, theatre, design studies at Kingston University London and interior architecture at the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest.

This background shaped the way I work: I first understand the logic of the space, then I build the atmosphere, the details and the implementation path that turns the design into a real home.

FAQ About Interior Design Projects

1. What is the difference between an interior architect, an interior designer and an architect? An interior architect plans the home interior as a whole: layout, furniture, circulation, electrical planning, plumbing, finishes, lighting and implementation. An interior designer usually focuses more on aesthetics: style, colours, décor and visual choices. An architect designs the building itself: structure, façades, permits and technical documentation. For a complete interior design project, the interior architect connects function, aesthetics and technical details into one coherent process. 2. What does a complete interior design project include? A complete interior design project includes the space layout, photorealistic 3D renders, technical drawings and a shopping list. In practical terms, it defines where each piece goes, how the home will look, what needs to be done on site and what products need to be purchased. Depending on the project, it can include electrical plans, plumbing plans, finishes, custom furniture, lighting, budget planning and product sourcing. 3. How much does an apartment interior design project cost in 2026? The cost depends on the number of rooms and the stages you need. At Urban Moon, prices are calculated per room and shown transparently: layout from €49/room, 3D renders from €249/room, technical drawings from €99/room and shopping list from €49/room. For a full apartment, you can configure your project on the services page and see the total cost before you pay. 4. How long does an interior design project take? The timeline depends on the number of rooms, the complexity of the home and the number of revisions. On average, the layout takes 2–4 days, 3D renders take 1–4 weeks, technical drawings take 1–2 weeks, and the shopping list takes 2–4 days. For a full apartment, the final timeline depends on the stages selected and how quickly decisions are approved. 5. Which Italian furniture brands do you work with? We work with over 56 Italian brands for furniture, finishes, lighting and bathroom products, including suppliers imported directly from the factory. These include Cierre, Borzalino, Scappini Home and Ghidini1961 for furniture, Listone Giordano, Mutina and Ariostea for finishes, Catellani & Smith, Martinelli Luce and Axolight for lighting, and Rexa and Tubes for bathrooms. Brands are selected according to the project style, budget and real needs of the home. 6. Can I work with an interior architect online if I live abroad? Yes. We create online interior design projects for clients in Romania and across Europe. We have already worked with clients from Italy, the UK, Germany, Belgium, France, Austria and the Czech Republic. The process is based on measurements, photos, existing plans and video calls. You receive the same deliverables: layout, 3D renders, technical drawings and shopping list. If physical presence is needed for measurements or implementation, this can be arranged separately, depending on the location. 7. What happens if I don’t like the proposed layout? You start with a small step, so you can check the direction without a major risk. If the proposed layout does not match what you want, you can stop after this stage. You still receive a professional evaluation of your space and you are not required to continue with the rest of the project. For the next stages, such as 3D renders, revisions are included so the project can be adjusted before implementation. 8. Who is Simona Preda? Simona Preda is an interior architect and founder of Urban Moon, an interior architecture studio based in Bucharest. She has 8 years of experience in residential interiors and studied at Kingston University London and the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest. Over the last 4 years, she has worked with more than 40 clients in Romania and Europe. One of her projects was awarded Best Design – Interior Private Residence Romania at the Romanian Property Awards.
